These necklaces make the most extraordinary status symbols

From Chopard to Boucheron, from Anna Hu to Alessio Boschi, from big names to imaginative designers, all have created a jewelry collection that captures the imagination of those who love to dream and of those who can spend.

Red Carpet jewelry - status symbols par excellence

Just look at the red carpet - the Oscars just behind us - and how the world enjoys looking at the stars and their magnificent outfits. It’s perhaps only the jewelry that tries to outshine every single one of those famous stars! More often than not, the jewelry is loaned. A great deal for both star and brand. The star can shine at its most glamorous, whilst the brand gets the exposure one can only dream of. The real clients of the jewelry brands are often those same stars, but most will be likely not as famous as them.

Necklaces have a strong symbolic value

If you look at a lady wearing necklaces like the ones we show in this blog today, you can’t help but think; wow, if only!

For most, it’s something we simply never can afford, which makes it a strong status symbol. Now status symbols are there to show the world your social position and your economic position. In other words, they send a message. Something people care a great deal about. Status symbols come in all forms and no one is really numb to the message. Whilst I personally may not envy someone driving a Ferrari, I surely envy a little bit those people who can afford to go on vacation when they want it and where they want to go.

Necklaces like these are not just artistic expressions, they are expressions of highly skilled designers and goldsmiths and stone-setters that have gained the position in their professional life, to create pieces like this. That in itself is also a status symbol. Having a clientele that would actually buy this jewelry from you, is telling a lot about your goals, your drive, your intentions, your dreams, your skills as a designer and creator. Your capital, as you must have the money to finance it before selling it. And be financially prepared not to immediately have the client for it.

It also tells a lot about your marketing and your sales skills and often, the capacity of moving around in the right networks.

Today and yesterday symbols:

Necklaces can often contain a world of symbols and meaning. It might be the stones used, the size or the kind of pendant it contains. It may have a religious meaning, now often used as a fashion statement or a magical or ceremonial one. Pendants can bring fortune or protect us. From amulets to lockets and other precious materials.

What do you think of that Wendy Yue necklace? Or those wonderful Van Cleef & Arpels examples of true statement necklaces? Did you like the Sicis Parrot or would the mystery setting ruby necklaces by Van Cleef & Arpels be much more your thing? And what about the stunning pieces by the ever wonderful Bulgari company?

Whilst it's not even the question if I can afford any of these necklaces, I will share with you my own, very personal top three. Before I do, however, I want to say how much joy it was to create this blog. Every single piece in this blog is outstanding!

1. Alessio Boschi, the one featured next to Chopard...I find it so beautiful and outstanding. The idea is nice, the way it's composed. Everything, I just adore this necklace!

2. Van Cleef & Arpels mystery setting ruby and diamond necklace. It has this incredible fashionable look almost. Sleek, sexy and sensational!

3. Boucheron, the Swan necklace. It's not just stunning, it is kind of endearing. The beauty is almost melancholic. Very beautiful!
