Jewelry heists are nothing new, but this one? It takes an unforgettable turn. When a man posing as an NBA representative entered Tiffany & Co. in Orlando, no one could have guessed where the diamonds would end up, quite literally. This true story, both bizarre and fascinating, sheds light on the extreme lengths some individuals will go to steal high-end jewelry. But beyond the headlines, there are valuable lessons for professionals in the jewelry world. Let’s dive into one of the strangest thefts ever linked to luxury, and what it reveals about the emotional power of jewelry and the importance of vigilance in our industry.

There’s luxury, and then there’s lunacy in luxury.
Welcome to the story of a man who didn’t just steal the jewels, he swallowed them. Literally. And yes, they were from Tiffany.
Last week in sunny Florida, a man walked into Tiffany & Co. at Orlando’s Mall at Millenia, claimed to represent an NBA star, and was promptly led into the VIP room. Smooth talk, designer clothes, even a piece of white gauze artfully placed on his nose, which police later called a disguise.
He was shown:
A pair of 4.86-carat diamond earrings worth $160,000
A pair of 8.19-carat diamond earrings worth $609,000
A 5.61-carat diamond ring worth $587,000
Then, he did what no jewelry lover in their right mind would ever do. He grabbed the lot and ran. Well, almost. The ring fell during the scuffle, and he fled with just the earrings. A clean getaway? Not quite.
Gilder, 32, already wanted on 48 warrants, made it as far as Tallahassee in a rented Mitsubishi from Houston. Florida Highway Patrol spotted him and pulled him over.
And then came the most bizarre part of this already strange story.
As he was being arrested, Gilder swallowed the earrings.
Two pairs of Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings, totaling nearly $770,000, disappeared into his digestive system.
At the Washington County Jail, scans confirmed the presence of foreign objects inside him. And in case anyone doubted what those objects were, Gilder asked jail staff,
"Am I going to be charged with what's in my stomach?"
Short answer? Probably.
Gilder’s attempt to disguise himself with gauze, which covered no wound, earned him a charge of robbery with a mask. Add grand theft to the list. He was also linked to a similar heist at a Tiffany’s in Texas in 2022.
Police haven’t confirmed if the earrings have been recovered, but this story might set a new standard for how far someone will go for diamonds.
While this reads like a Netflix script, there’s a sobering takeaway for those in the industry.
Security remains crucial, especially when showing high-value items
Always verify credentials, even when someone claims to represent a celebrity
Trust but verify, and have an exit strategy that does not involve someone’s digestive system
But beyond the obvious security lesson, this case reminds us just how irrational the human relationship with jewelry can be. People risk their freedom, even their health, for these sparkly symbols of desire. And that tells us something about the emotional power of jewelry.
What do you think?
