From Russia with love: Marchak and Jewellery Theatre

| Esther Ligthart | News & Stories

Russia has a wonderful history of jewelry. Probably, what springs to mind first, is the illustrious Fabergé. His eggs are still creating gasps of pure admiration worldwide. But of course, there were others. And I would like to show you a bit more about one with a long history and one with a much shorter history. Let’s dive into Marchak and Jewellery Theatre!

Marchak3

A very important piece by Marchak. In yellow gold and platinum.

Marchak, the Cartier of Kiev

Marchak can be found in Paris these days. Originally they are from Kiev, Ukraine. Today the biggest country in Europe but before it was part of Russia. During that time Joseph Marchak became *the Cartier of Kiev*.

Nothing less than a fairytale this beautiful brooch. Below you can find a similar one by Jewellery Theatre. Both look amazing to me. Important and not something you would wear daily. But if money was not an option; how cool would it look, even on a simple outfit like jeans and a fitted t-shirt with a chanel-like jacket and the only piece of accessory: this brooch. WOW!

Fabergé

His direct rival, although friends, was Fabergé. During the Russian revolution he fled to Paris, France. He was asked by the Fabergé family to take some of their precious jewelry too with them. Later, when the Fabergé family fled too, they all returned it to them.

I am helpless. When I see designs like these. They make me smile. And it is an animal! Love it and know that pieces like these might seem a little too particular maybe. Too extreme, or much too realistic. But I think it is exactly what makes them appealing. Also throughout time. I think it might even be safe to say that it is these kind of jewelry that holds their value, and even increases it, over the years.

Today’s Marchak

Today Marchak is found in its own boutique, still in Paris, where you can find their often humorous jewelry. They also create a little secret detail in every piece.

Your hair in a ponytail or bun. And the only jewelry on you: these earrings. Stunning.

Jewellery Theatre, jewelry as actors

Jewellery Theatre has a much shorter history. But if you look at their pieces, you get the idea that they are much longer around. I get a sort of idea that this was jewelry for the elite and famous of some decades ago, which I find very appealing.  Maxim Voznesenky started the company in 1998. Quickly they gained interest by the industry when attending a show in Moscow one year later.

This looks much more like a painting than a piece of jewelry to me. It is just amazing in detail! The amount of gold and stones make it incredibily rich. This to me is more art than just jewelry.

The *heel*

There hallmark is the *heel*, a very smart construction that allows rings to be displayed upright. Thus allowing the jewellery to become a piece of art or better, like an actor, creating its own conversation with the admirer.

what to say.....no words needed I think. Just beautiful...I am in awe.

Boutique in Amsterdam and London

The Jewellery Theatre has its own boutique in London and a shop in shop style boutique in Amsterdam. And extraordinarily enough; the other dealers are found also in Amsterdam, Altea, Spain and London. I never thought that this very exclusive design would be found so well presented in my own capital. But I am looking forward to pay a visit to Jannie Iwema at Bonebakker in Amsterdam soon. And watch the collection for real!

Jannie, I am coming soon! J
