World's largest Gem-Quality Ruby ever found, the Estrela de FURA 55.22, will be auctioned at Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on the 8th of June 2023

I am thrilled to share the incredible story of FURA Gems' historic discovery of the world's largest gem-quality ruby ever found. In September 2022, the news of this remarkable gemstone unearthed from FURA's ruby mine in Mozambique captured global attention and sent shockwaves through the gemstone market.

UNEARTHED IN MOZAMBIQUE AND CUT FROM A 101-CARAT ROUGH:
THE WORLD’S LARGEST GEM-QUALITY RUBY IN EXISTENCE

Named Estrela de FURA 55.22, meaning "Star of FURA" in Portuguese, this extraordinary ruby weighed a staggering 101 carats rough and 55.22 carats in its final form and boasted an exceptional depth of color and size. It shines a spotlight on Mozambique as a renowned source of premium quality rubies. Even in its rough state, Estrela de FURA 55.22 has already been considered a treasure of nature, with its fluorescence, outstanding clarity, and vivid red hue, often referred to as "pigeon's blood" - a color traditionally associated only with Burmese rubies.

EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE MORE THAN $30 MILLION

FURA Gems Inc. is a young and innovative colored gemstone mining- and marketing company making waves in the industry. Established in 2017 and headquartered in Dubai, FURA is a trailblazer in the world of colored gemstones, covering the entire spectrum of emeralds, rubies, and sapphires with operations in Colombia, Mozambique, and Australia, respectively.

After seven months of anticipation, the speculation about Estrela de FURA's whereabouts finally ended at The Exceptional Luxury Evening Auction in Hong Kong, where Sotheby's auctioneer, Uni Kim, unveiled Estrela de FURA 55.22 to the world. This significant and rare Mozambique gem weighs a substantial 55.22 carats, making it the largest gem-quality ruby ever to appear at auction.

Its rich saturation of the color, untouched by heat treatment, highly crystalline appearance, and incomparable size make it a truly unique and valuable gemstone, estimated to be worth over $30 million.

Very rare and extremely beautiful quality ruby

Before the auction, extensive studies were conducted on the 101-carat rough ruby to determine the best cutting options. Ultimately, Estrela de FURA was masterfully cut and faceted by a team of skilled artisans, transforming the rough into a stunning cushion-shaped stone. According to a Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) report, this expert cutting resulted in vivid red hues due to multiple internal reflections. The report further describes the gem as "a natural ruby from Mozambique of this size and quality" as "very rare" and "an exceptional treasure of nature." Notably, Estrela de FURA is profoundly rich in chromium, which causes the stone to radiate a fiery red fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet light, such as sunlight, further enhancing its vibrancy as though lit from within.

Mozambique

As a jewelry blogger and nature lover, I am captivated by the story of Estrela de FURA 55.22, the world's largest gem-quality ruby, and its journey from being unearthed in Mozambique to the unveiling at the auction. What a marvel of nature this is!

But let's not forget that it is also a testament to the beauty and rarity of natural gemstones and a celebration of Mozambique as a source of premium quality rubies. The craftsmanship and artistry involved in cutting and faceting this exceptional gemstone are genuinely awe-inspiring, resulting in a dazzling ruby that will surely be cherished by its fortunate owner for generations to come.

‘’With its perfect color, exceptional clarity, and superb cushion shape, this rare gemstone is poised to become a standard bearer for African rubies and gemstones. The Gübelin Gem Lab has stated that this ruby is setting a new record for Mozambican rubies and rubies in general.’’

The Estrela de FURA 55.22  is going on a World Tour.

A very proud Dev Shetty, founder and CEO of FURA Gems, shares with me that the Estrela de FURA 55.22 will soon embark on a worldwide tour, with exhibitions scheduled in Taipei, China, Singapore, Geneva, and Dubai, before taking center stage at Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on 8 June. This gem is expected to surpass the record set by The Sunrise Ruby, a 25.59-carat Burmese ruby that sold for $30.3 million at Sotheby's Geneva in 2015 and still holds the world auction record for a ruby.

QUOTE:

''Ruby mining in Mozambique has a long and rich history, with significant discoveries dating back to the 1960s. However, in the early 2000s, the mining of rubies gained momentum in Mozambique with the discovery of the Montepuez ruby deposit. This deposit, one of the largest ruby deposits in the world, has attracted significant interest from international mining companies due to the outstanding transparency and rich color of the rubies found there.’’

In conclusion, the Estrela de FURA 55.22 is a landmark event in the jewelry world, representing the rarity and beauty of Mozambican rubies. This exceptional gem is set to make history and captivate the global jewelry market with its unparalleled quality and exquisite beauty. I can't wait to see what will happen during the auction and who will be the fortunate owner of this rare beauty of Mother Nature.
